Who do you say you are?

Main Point

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record a time when Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” They give a lot of answers and then Jesus asks, “Who do you say I am?” This is that important point where Peter acknowledges that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah). This is an important question for us to ask and answer for ourselves.

But another question for us to ask is: Who do I say I am? Peter could have begun this letter by identifying himself a number of ways: Simon, fisherman, brother, husband, father, preacher, denier. All of these titles would fit Peter but instead of one of these he chose the word apostle. Peter remembers himself as one who has been specifically chosen by Jesus to share the Gospel with others. There are characteristics to being chosen by God:

  • We are aliens (temporary residents) in this world
  • We are chosen by God the Father
  • We are being sanctified by the Spirit
  • For obedience in Christ

Scripture

  • 1 Peter 1:1-2
  • Matthew 16:13-16; Mark 8:27-29; Luke 9:18-20
  • John 1:35-42—The calling of Andrew and Simon Peter

Questions

  • What are some of the stories you know about Peter?
  • What are some different titles you could use to describe yourself?
  • Honestly answer: Who do you say you are? Who do you say Jesus is?
  • What does it mean to you that Christ chose you?
  • How is Christ changing you right now? (sanctification)
  • Why is obedience important?

Application

  • Remember who you are in Christ this week—not who you once were
  • Write encouraging verses on post it notes and put them on your mirror or locker as a reminder that you are chosen.
