Cornerstone

Main Point

Last time we looked at metaphors for Christ-followers: spiritual buildings. This week we look at one of the big metaphors for Christ: cornerstone. Christ is the ultimate building block to our spiritual lives. Christ needs to be placed in our lives in such a way that the rest of the building (our lives) remain firm. Jesus is also the stone that is rejected by others. Others choose to build their lives with other things as the foundation.

What Peter says about the Cornerstone.

  1. Cornerstone imagery is found in scripture
  2. The stone is in Zion: a picture of the new covenant in Christ
  3. It is precious to God
  4. It is precious to us as believers
  5. It is rejected by others
  6. It allows us to be a royal priesthood

Scripture

  • 1 Peter 2:6-9
  • Matthew 21:42, Ephesians 2:19-22, Acts 4:11
  • Exodus 19
  • Deuteronomy 7:6-9

 Questions

  • Why is the cornerstone important when you are building a building?
  • Why is Jesus precious to believers?
  • Why is Jesus rejected by others?
  • What does it mean to be a royal priesthood?

Application

  • How is your spiritual house doing?
  • Memorize Psalm 118:22:

The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.
