Our Response to Salvation

Main Point

Last week we looked at how great salvation is. How the prophets, apostles and Holy Spirit all spoke of how important God’s saving plan is—Even the angels are amazed by what God has done for us.

So how should we react to the knowledge of salvation? These next several verses give us an action plan

Salvation Lived Out—a response to verse 12:

  • Prepare your mind for action. (discipline)
  • Keep sober in spirit (don’t lose spiritual control)
  • Fix our hope on grace. (focus)
  • Be Obedient to your new life. (right living)
  • Don’t Conform to your old life. (don’t look back)
  • But be holy like Jesus. He called us in all our behavior.  (goals)
  • Have a healthy fear of God. (honor God with your lives)

“In this life believers cannot be sinless (Romans 7:14-25; 1 John 1:8) as God is, but no less than His holiness is the goal at which they are, equipped by the Word and the Spirit, to aim (Ephesians 2:10).”

Scripture

  • 1 Peter 1:13-17
  • Romans 12:1-2
  • Matthew 5:48
  • Exodus 19:5-6

 Questions

  • How can we get our mind ready to follow Christ?
  • What does it look like to be calm spiritually?
  • Why is it important for us to focus on grace?
  • Why is it hard to leave our past behind us?

Application

  • Where in your life can you be more disciplined?
  • Memorize Romans 12:1-2 this week.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
