What is Redemption?

Main Point

The last few weeks we have been looking at Salvation and our response to it. But salvation is not free, it costs something. The cost of salvation is what we call Redemption, it describes how God received payment for our sin. How are you and I ransomed for our sin?

Four Characteristics of Redemption:

  1. From: a futile way of life (Romans 6:6, 17, 18; Titus 3:3)
    1. Lusts, lack of understanding, useless, passed down from others
  2. With: the blood of Christ (Is.52:3; 2 Cor.5:21; Hebrews 10:1-10)
    1. Unblemished, spotless. Blood=atonement Ex. (12:1-13)
  3. By Jesus: Was before creation, but appeared (Christmas), was raised (Easter), glorified (reigning in heaven) Romans 1:2; Philippians 2
  4. For what: He did it for us. So that we would have faith (now) and hope (future)

Scripture

  • 1 Peter 1:18-21
  • Exodus 12:1-13
  • Hebrews 10:1-10
  • Galatians 4:4-5
  • Psalm 49:7-9

 Questions

  • What do you think of when you hear the word “ransom”?
  • Why do we need to be ransomed?
  • Why is the blood of Jesus so important?
  • How are you living in faith now?
  • How are you hopeful for the future?

Application

  • Where in your life can you be more disciplined?
  • Memorize 2 Corinthians 5:21 this week.

For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
