Spiritual Buildings

Main Point

There are rewards or privileges to being connected to Christ. There are several metaphors used to describe believers who have a new life in Jesus. Just like Christ, believers are described as stones.

Metaphors for Believers

Living Stones: rejected by men, accepted by God

  1. Living stones connect to Christ (Colossians 3:3-4)
  2. Built up as spiritual houses
  3. A holy priesthood- our bodies are holy temples. God’s spirit lives inside us.
    1. God chose, cleansed, clothed us (J. MacArthur)
  1. Spiritual sacrifice- our entire lives are to be lived for Christ. Service and Obedience.

Scripture

  • 1 Peter 2:4-5
  • Hebrews 3:6
  • Exodus 19
  • Exodus 28 and 29: God chose us like he chose Aaron.
  • Lk. 6:46-49

 Questions

  • Which metaphor stands out to you and why?
  • What metaphors can you use to describe the spiritual journey?
  • How do you feel about being a priest?
  • In what ways have you had to sacrifice to follow Christ?

Application

  • How is your spiritual house doing?
  • Memorize Luke 6:46-49:

“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
