Main Point
What does Godly living look like? This is what Peter describes in the next verses of chapter 3. What are the goals of the Christian life? What should a Christ-follower set their mind to do with the life that God has given them?
Goals for the Christian Life:
- Have a Christlike attitude
- Have a good relationship with other Christians (don’t look for conflict)
- Sympathize with those who are hurting (care for others)
- Have brotherly love for one another
- Kindhearted means to care deep down in your emotions for others
- Be humble- look to love sacrificially as Christ
- Responding like Christ: Don’t return evil or insult on someone else, but bless your enemies
- Speak well (Psalm 34:12-14). Turn away from deceit and seek peace
- Remember God’s eyes are toward us. He is on our side and hears our prayers.
Scripture
- 1 Peter 3:8-12
- Philippians 1:27-28
- Matthew 5:38-45; 18:21-25
- James 1:26; 3:6-10
- Psalm 34:12-14
- Proverbs 18:21
Questions
- What are some of the goals you have for your life? Are they external goals (home, school, family, money.) or internal (spiritual, emotional, relational)?
- Are external goals bad? How can we find the right balance for our goals?
- Why does Peter want us to care deeply for one another?
- What does it mean that God’s eyes are toward the righteous but against those who do evil?
Application
- How can you show someone that you care for them this week?
- Write a note to someone to encourage them this week.
- Commit to praying for those people whom you do not get along with.
