Big Idea: Our broken world needs a community of humble and hopeful Christ-followers.
Icebreaker: Talk about the last time you were invited to an event with a group of people and you just said “Nah…I don’t think so!” What was it that caused you to respond that way?
Key Scripture:
John 16:33; Philippians 2:1-8, 15
Discussion Questions:
- In the message it was said that we live in a "broken world". In what way have you recently seen brokenness of the world? Give an example if possible.
- Read John 16:33. From this verse what is Jesus promising? How can Jesus promise this? How does this make you think and feel about living in this broken world.
- Read Philippians 2:1-2. How important do you think having a community built on love is? Why? What should be the characteristics of group built on love?
- Read Philippians 2:3-8. “[A truly humble person] would not be always telling us they were a nobody (because a person who keeps saying they are a nobody is actually a self-obsessed person). The thing we would remember from meeting a truly gospel-humble person is how much they seemed to be totally interested in us." - Tim Keller, The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, p. 32. How can you foster this mindset?
MOVING FORWARD
Father, you have challenged us, through Jesus' example, to live in a way that is opposite of what "the world" says is the way to live. We ask you to transform our thinking and help us to live in the humble and loving way Jesus did. In Jesus name, Amen!
